Non-threatening leadership strategies – #4 Someone Steals Your Idea

Arrrrrgh!!!!!!

ALL.

THE.

TIME!!!

Once, a man took credit for my idea LITERALLY 30 seconds after I said it. Other men in the room even noticed, it was so obvious. But the man who did it still didn’t recognize what he did, even when it was brought to his attention. And I think that’s the worst of it. Men do this all the time and don’t even realize they are doing it. Our contributions of women really that overlooked or minimized? Do men think these ideas are coming from the voices in their head? I have no doubt that this is a gender-biased behaviour, acted by men upon women.

The corollary to this is that women must practically swoon over the ideas contributed by men in order to increase the chances that their ideas are heard. “Bob, that is SUCH a great idea! And what do you think if we added to that by doing xyz? Then your idea would be amazing!” I have done this as well 🙁
