La Quinta Hookup Season

We kicked off the day with a lovely guided meditation, interrupted only once by a baffled woman looking to join the yoga class. Apparently people sitting in silence with their eyes closed didn’t say “not the yoga class” to her. People then scattered to shop, lie by the pool, visit local family, or attend the actual yoga class that followed the meditation.

Janice, Monica and Jeanette headed off on a long hike, Chrystal visited her cousin who was coincidentally (or not) in town at the same time, and Sofia and Jane did some birthday shopping. Andi, Morag and I saw Kinga safely off to the airport, and took advantage of her UBER to catch a ride to the Cove to Lake trail head. The various paths from the parking lot to the actual trail heads were not exactly clear, so we followed a couple of men who said they knew where they were going. We ended up scrambling up the side of a mountain on no trail that I could identify on a map. There was some kind of narrow footpath to follow, and this lead us to a turn-around spot with an amazing view of the valley and the distant mountains. Morag claims not to be much of a mountain climber but I have photographic evidence that suggests otherwise.

We did some more poolside lounging after the various activities of the day, with Morag breaking out the selfie stick one last time. The best part about this picture is how far away we all are! We are all wearing bathing suits, so you’re welcome.

The evening adventure took us to a place called “The Nest”. It’s either a restaurant or a nightclub or a hook-up spot for the elderly, but whatever the case, it elicited rounds of laughter from various UBER drivers and scorn from fancy resort guests. Turns out the Nest is all of the above. There is a restaurant in back serving tasty comfort food, and a nightclub in front that doubles as a pick-up joint place for strange-looking 70-year-olds. It features a long, narrow dance floor in front of a bar that runs the length of the room and a small DJ-like booth where some dude croons live versions of popular bar songs such as “Sweet Caroline” and “New York, New York”.

This club was far more fun than it had any right to be, even in spite of the weird Pennywise clown creeping at the windows. The night ended satisfyingly, with Morag using Sofia’s money to bribe the Piano Bar guy into playing Piano Man a second time (in a row) so that we could all sing along.
